This active and passive voice test consists of 20 questions, each with four multiple-choice answers. Read each question carefully and choose the correct answer from the choices. After completing, you can check your score.
A brief knowledge of active and passive voices:
We use the active voice when the subject performs an action in a sentence. It makes sentences direct, clear, and natural.
Example: The teacher explains the lesson.
Here, “the teacher” performs the action of explaining.
Passive voice is used when the subject receives the action. We use it when the action or its result is more important than the person performing it.
Example: The lesson is explained by the teacher.
The basic structures:
Active voice: Subject + Verb + Object
Passive voice: Object + appropriate form of be + Past Participle (V3) + (by + Subject)
For example:
Active: She writes a letter.
Passive: A letter is written by her.
The example above shows that the passive construction uses the appropriate form of be (such as is, was, will be, or has been) followed by the past participle of the main verb.
Active to Passive Voice Conversion:
Identify the subject, verb, and object in the active sentence.
Move the object to the beginning of the passive sentence.
Change the main verb into the appropriate form of be + past participle.
Move the original subject after by if necessary.
Maintain the original tense and meaning.
Examples:
Present Simple: He cleans the room. → The room is cleaned by him.
Past Simple: She completed the task. → The task was completed by her.
Future Simple: They will announce the result. → The result will be announced by them.
Always keep the tense as is when changing voice. Use the correct form of be and the past participle. Pronouns may also change: I becomes me, she becomes her, and they become them.
Remember that verbs without objects, such as sleep and arrive, generally cannot be changed into passive voice. Regular practice improves accuracy and helps you master the active and passive voice.
