This determiner/article test consists of 20 questions, each with four multiple-choice answers. Read each question carefully and choose the best answer from the choices. At the end, you can see your score.
Before starting, learn a brief knowledge of determiners and articles:
Determiners are words placed before nouns to identify them, indicate quantity, show ownership, or specify which person or thing we mean. They help make the meaning of a noun clearer.
The bold words in the examples are determiners:
This book is interesting.
My friend lives nearby.
Some students arrived early.
Three apples are on the table.
Important Types of Determiners
1. Articles: A, an, and the indicate whether a noun is being mentioned generally or refers to something specific. Examples: I saw a dog. / She ate an orange. / The dog was black.
2. Demonstratives: This, that, these, and those point to particular people or things. Examples: This pen is mine. / Those houses are beautiful.
3. Possessives: My, your, his, her, its, our, and their indicate ownership or relationships. Examples: My brother is a teacher. / Their house is spacious.
4. Quantifiers: Some, any, much, many, few, little, and enough express quantity or amount. Examples: We have some time. / She has many books.
5. Numbers: Cardinal numbers (one, two, three) indicate quantity, while ordinal numbers (first, second, third) indicate order. Examples: I bought two pens. / He won the first prize.
6. Distributives: Each, every, either, and neither refer to individuals or members of a group. Examples: Each student received a certificate. / Every child needs care.
How Do We Use Articles?
Indefinite articles (a/an): Use a before a consonant sound and an before a vowel sound. They generally introduce a singular countable noun that is not specifically identified.
Examples: a university, an hour.Definite article (the): Use the when referring to a specific noun, something already mentioned, or something uniquely identifiable.
Examples: I saw a cat. The cat was sleeping.
Remember: Determiners generally come before nouns, but not every noun requires one.
This quiz will help assess whether you correctly understand what a determiner or article is, the types of determiners and articles, and how we use them in sentences.
